Rally preparation 2012...
After the eight hard working years, she needed a facelift and some tlc, so I decided to freshen up her look by getting some carbon fibre vinyl and cover the roof and add some racing stripes. We also fitted the four spots and bought a sump guard to finish off the look.
Then some much needed mechanical work was done. I converted to an electronic ignition kit, getting rid of those silly points and condenser. We did a bit of work on the cooling system e.g. new water pump, thermostat and adding a small auxiliary radiator which I took from the heater unit inside the Mini (won't be needing that in Africa....hopefully).
2013 To do list....
The Mini needs some stopping power, so we'll do a disc brake conversion and while we're at it, add a set of Hi Lo suspension to get over the monster speed humps, hippos and Tokolosh.
A high capacity radiator, extra engine stabilisers, wheel arches and skid guard, protecting the entire belly will be installed.
Some more intensive surgery will include a cylinder head conversion so that the Mini can run on unleaded fuel, since leaded fuel is becoming a scarce commodity these days.

THE BEAST :P
History in a nutshell...
Our Mini is a 1977 model, put together from the remains of a few other minis that unfortunately aren't with us any more. The body is a 1000cc Mini and a 1275cc engine gets those huge tyres rolling. The Mini has been with us for eight years now and we're not planning on selling it soon...or ever, even though countless offers have been received from numerous people e.g. random bloke that sells 'koeksisters' at the robot and the guy that makes curtains at the Oriental Plaza. It's been used as a daily runner for most the time and is now considered to be a family member, that's why we couldn't Put Foot without her.
